The Library’s highest priority is to inspire a lifelong commitment to learning and creativity which we believe leads to a more prosperous and connected community.
While tax dollars provide us with a strong financial base, your generous donations are used solely for Library innovations and services that are beyond the daily operating budget such as an expanded Home Borrowing Program, additional Hot Reads and Hot DVDs, as well as support for our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program and Summer Reading for all ages. One Hundred years ago, a group of Kirkwood citizens had a vision to open a public library in Kirkwood. They achieved that goal, opening the first tax-supported library in St. Louis County on December 11, 1926. Kirkwood Public Library was located in City Hall. Head librarian Eugenia F. Becker set the stage for service and growth. In 1940, the library relocated to its own building at 140 E. Jefferson, which remains our address today.
We hope that you will take part in our Centennial Celebration this year by visiting the library and attending events. This milestone is all about you, our community!
